Comparison_Perbandingan

Comparison berarti perbandingan. Jika kita membandingkan sesuatu dengan yang lain, akan ada tiga kemungkinan:

a.       Kedua hal itu memiliki kualitas yang sama: sama-sama besar, sama-sama bagus,dan sebagainya. Atau

b.      Salah satu memiliki kualitas yang lebih atau kurang: lebih besar, lebih bagus, lebih jelek dan sebagainya.   Atau

c.       Salah satu memilki kualitas yang paling baik atau paling jelek, dan sebagainya: terbesar, terbaik, dan sebagainya.

A. Jika kita membandingkan suatu hal dengan sesuatu yang lain dan keduanya memiliki kualitas yang sama, 

kita menggunakan pola:

                as  …  as

 titik-titiknya diisi dengan kata sifat (adjective) atau kata keterangan (adverb) yang dimiliki kedua hal yang dibandingkan.

Contoh (no. 1, 2, & 3 menggunakan adjective. No. 4 menggunakan adverb):

Membandingkan satu dengan satu

1.       Chocolate cake is as big as vanilla cake.

       Kue coklat sebesar kue vanilla.

2.       Cheese cake is as delicious as chocolate cake.

         Kue keju seenak kue coklat.

Membandingkan banyak dengan banyak

3.       The girls are as smart as the boys.

       Pemudi-pemudi itu secerdas pemuda-pemuda.

4.       Bees fly as quickly as butterfly.

      Lebah terbang secepat terbangnya kupu-kupu.

B. Jika kita membandingkan satu dengan sesuatu yang lain namun salah satu memiliki kualitas lebih atau kurang (comparative), inilah pola yang digunakan:

               

                (Adjective/adverb)+er than                       atau       more (adjective/adverb) than

Contoh (No. 1 & 4 menggunakan adjective. No. 2 & 3 menggunakan adverb):

1.   The elephant is bigger than the mouse. >> Gajah itu lebih besar daripada tikus.

2.  The elephant runs faster than the mouse. >> Gajah itu berlari lebih cepat daripada tikus

3.    The mouse runs more slowly than the elephant. >> Tikus itu berlari lebih lambat daripada gajah.

4.       Baso tahu is more delicious than sushi. >> Baso tahu lebih enak daripada sushi.

C. Jika kita membandingkan satu dengan yang lainnya dan satu itu memiliki kualitas yang paling (superlative), kita menggunakan pola ini:

                                the (adjective/adverb)+est        atau       the most (adjective/adverb)

Contoh:

1.       Australia is the smallest continent in the world. >> Australia adalah benua terkecil di dunia.

2.       Durian is the most delicious fruit. >> Durian adalah buah yang terenak.

3.       Snail moves the slowliest. >> Siput bergerak secara paling lambat.

4.       Cheetah runs the quickliest. >> Macan tutul berlari secara paling cepat.
