S-V Agreement

S-V agreement bisa berarti kesesuaian antara subject dan verb. Jika subject-nya tunggal (singular) maka verb yang digunakan pun yang singular. Sebaliknya, jika subject-nya jamak (plural) maka verb yang digunakan pun yang plural.

Contoh:
1.       The earth is round.                          >>           Bumi itu bulat.
‘earth’ adalah singular maka kata kerja to be yang dipakai adalah ‘is’.

2.       The sun rises in the east.              >>           Matahari terbit di timur.
‘Sun’ adalah singular maka verb ‘rise’ ditambah ‘s’ jadi ‘rises’.*

3.       Dolphins are mammals.                 >>           Lumba-lumba adalah hewan mamalia.
‘Dolphins’ adalah plural ditandai dengan adanya ‘s’ **setelah ‘dolphin’ maka kata kerja to be yang dipakai adalah ‘are’.

4.       Students study every day.           >>           Para siswa belajar setiap hari.
‘Students’ adalah plural ditandai dengan adanya ‘s’ setelah ‘student’ maka verb yang dipakai adalah ‘study’ tanpa ditambah ‘s’/’es’.

Jika suatu kalimat menggunakan there + to be maka to be yang digunakan tergantung dari kata benda (noun) yang mengikuti.

Contoh:

1.       There is a book on the table.      >>           Ada sebuah buku di atas meja.
To be yang digunakan adalah yang singular yakni ‘is’ karena noun yang mengikutinya singular yakni ‘book’.

2.       There are some books under the table. >>           Ada beberapa buku di bawah meja.
To be yang digunakan adalah yang plural yakni ‘are’ karena noun yang mengikutinya plural yakni ‘books’

Subject yang diawali ‘every’ adalah singular. Contoh:
                Every student is special.
Subject yang merupakan kata benda yang tak dapat dihitung (uncountable noun) adalah singular. Contoh:                          The information on newspaper is important.

*tidak semua verb cukup ditambah ‘s’ untuk subject yang singular. Ada beberapa verb yang ditambah ‘es’ seperti fix jadi fixes, study jadi studies. Ada pun verb yang berubah seperti have jadi has.
**tidak semua noun yang plural ditandai dengan ‘s’ di akhir hurufnya. Ada beberapa noun yang plural ditandai dengan ‘es’ seperti box jadi boxes. Ada pun noun yang tidak beraturan seperti person jadi people.

Comparison_Perbandingan

Comparison berarti perbandingan. Jika kita membandingkan sesuatu dengan yang lain, akan ada tiga kemungkinan:

                as  …  as
titik-titiknya diisi dengan kata sifat (adjective) atau kata keterangan (adverb) yang dimiliki kedua hal yang dibandingkan.

Contoh (no. 1, 2, & 3 menggunakan adjective. No. 4 menggunakan adverb):

Membandingkan satu dengan satu
1.       Chocolate cake is as big as vanilla cake.
       Kue coklat sebesar kue vanilla.
2.       Cheese cake is as delicious as chocolate cake.
         Kue keju seenak kue coklat.

Membandingkan banyak dengan banyak
3.       The girls are as smart as the boys.
       Pemudi-pemudi itu secerdas pemuda-pemuda.

4.       Bees fly as quickly as butterfly.

      Lebah terbang secepat terbangnya kupu-kupu.

B. Jika kita membandingkan satu dengan sesuatu yang lain namun salah satu memiliki kualitas lebih atau kurang (comparative), inilah pola yang digunakan:

(Adjective/adverb)+er than                       atau       more (adjective/adverb) than

Contoh (No. 1 & 4 menggunakan adjective. No. 2 & 3 menggunakan adverb):
1.   The elephant is bigger than the mouse. >> Gajah itu lebih besar daripada tikus.
2.  The elephant runs faster than the mouse. >> Gajah itu berlari lebih cepat daripada tikus
3.    The mouse runs more slowly than the elephant. >> Tikus itu berlari lebih lambat daripada gajah.

4.       Baso tahu is more delicious than sushi. >> Baso tahu lebih enak daripada sushi.

C. Jika kita membandingkan satu dengan yang lainnya dan satu itu memiliki kualitas yang paling (superlative), kita menggunakan pola ini:

the (adjective/adverb)+est        atau       the most (adjective/adverb)

Contoh:
1.       Australia is the smallest continent in the world. >> Australia adalah benua terkecil di dunia.
2.       Durian is the most delicious fruit. >> Durian adalah buah yang terenak.
3.       Snail moves the slowliest. >> Siput bergerak secara paling lambat.
4.       Cheetah runs the quickliest. >> Macan tutul berlari secara paling cepat.

Pronoun Versi Bahasa Indonesia

Pronoun bisa diartikan sebagai kata ganti. Sama halnya dalam bahasa Indonesia, pronoun terbagi menjadi kata ganti orang pertama, kedua dan ketiga. Berikut adalah pronoun dalam bahasa Inggris:

Subject
Object
Adjective
Possessive
Reflexive
I
Me
My
Mine
Myself
You
You
Your
Yours
Yourself / yourselves
They
Them
Their
Theirs

We
Us
Our
Ours
Ourselves
He
Him
His
His
Himself
She
Her
Her
Hers
Herself
It
It
Its
Its
Itself

Pronoun akan berubah berdasarkan fungsinya. Misalnya, jika kata ganti orang pertama yakni ‘saya’ atau ‘aku’, dalam suatu kalimat merupakan suatu subjek maka  pronoun dalam bahasa Inggrisnya adalah ‘I’ seperti dalam kalimat:

Saya selalu makan pagi. >>           I always eat breakfast.

Jika ‘saya’atau ‘aku’ dalam kalimat berfungsi sebagai objek seperti dalam kalimat di bawah ini maka pronoun yang dipakai adalah ‘me’:

Ibuku mencintaiku.         >>           My mother loves me.

Jika ‘aku’ berfungsi sebagai kata sifat (adjective) yang menerangkan kata benda (noun) maka pronoun-nya adalah ‘my’ seperti dalam kalimat di atas. Kata ‘my’ menerangkan noun yakni kata ‘mother’.
Namun, dalam kalimat berikut:

Buku ini adalah punyaku.              >>           This book is mine.

‘ku’ menunjukkan kepemilikkan (possessive) tanpa diikuti kata benda/hal yang dimilikinya maka pronounnya adalah mine.

Terakhir, kata ganti yang berfungsi reflexive dapat dilihat dari kalimat berikut ini:

Saya sendiri yang membuat kuenya kemarin.     >>           I, myself, made the cake yesterday.

Dan begitu seterusnya untuk kata ganti orang kedua dan ketiga.

Berikut ini adalah sebuah paragraf yang menggunakan pronoun:

Namaku adalah Cinta Suci. Aku tinggal di Cimahi. Aku punya satu saudara perempuan dan satu saudara laki-laki. Saudara perempuanku lebih tua dariku. Namanya Kasih Sayang. Saudara laki-lakiku jauh lebih muda dariku. Namanya Setia Perkasa. Saya sendiri yang memberi nama untuknya.

>>
My name is Cinta Suci. I live in Cimahi. I have one sister and one brother. My sister is older than me. Her name is Kasih Sayang. My brother is much younger than me. His name is Setia Perkasa. I, myself, named him.
